Projects in Welding

by Adam I.

Tom and I helped make a custom oil pan, which you see in the picture to the right. We had to first make the templates on cardboard, by measuring how big the customer wanted it. Then we traced the templates on metal and cut them out. Then we had to grind and bend it to fit snug on the engine. It had to be almost perfect so it wouldn't leak.

I am a first year Welding student at IVVC and I am planning to come back again next year. I never really welded before this year, so I didn't know what to expect. After being here for almost a whole school year, I have learned many different things. I have learned about the different types of welding, different joints you can weld, and different positions you can weld.

The different types of welding we have learned are stick, MIG, gas welding, and TIG. There are four basic joints we have learned to weld. They are lap, "T," open corner and butt. Those are the basic ones, but there are many more.

There are also different positions you can weld and may need to weld if you are out on the job. The easiest one is "1F" that is flat, another is "2F" which is horizontal. "3F" is vertical and "4F" is overhead. There is also another set that goes from "1G" to "4G" and they are the same as the other ones, it just has a gap in it.
