Health Occupations I Class

by Brandi T., Brittany H., Sara C., Ashley C. and Jessica K.

This semester in Health Occupations I we have had the experience of job shadowing. We choose a health profession that we are interested in learning about. We have a total of five days to experience three different health care positions. The job sites we participated in varied from doctor’s offices to day surgery to a veterinary office. We were able to observe the skills we've learned and put some of them to work during our two-hour job shadowing experience. We have learned many new skills that have set us on a path to a nursing career. This hands-on experience was a great way to help better our skills and see them in action by health professionals. We are all looking forward to coming back next year to take the CNA class.

The month of February was heart month so to honor that; we decorated the glass window in the IVVC hallway. We used the manikins from class to show skills such as blood pressure and infant CPR. We also cut out paper hearts and wrote medical terms and valentines sayings on them. To educate the other students and staff at IVVC about a heart attack, we placed a poster with the signs and symptoms of a heart attack. We tied it all together with a filmstrip, taking pictures of us making hearts with our arms and bodies.

As a nutrition portion of the class, we make a healthy snack to sell to Health Occupations II and Sports Medicine students. With the money we earn from the healthy snack, we will be taking a trip to Chicago at the end of the year. The February healthy snack was quesadillas, chips and salsa.  Chips and quesadillas were both 50 cents each and the salsa was 25 cents. The class made a profit of $40.00 from this snack.
