Auto Mechanics

by Nick Little, Auto Mechanics Instructor

It is hard to believe we are past the halfway point in our school year! You know what they say, “time flies when you are having fun!”

We are having all kinds of fun here in Auto Mechanics. We have a lot of interesting projects in the shop that the students are really enjoying. Currently we have a school car that we are replacing a transmission in, a Saturn in for suspension work, a Ford Explorer for a door latch, and a Chevy Monte Carlo for front struts, just to name a few.

In the classroom, we are studying engine performance. Much to the disappointment of the students, this doesn’t mean high performance! Although we do not work on a lot of engine-performance related jobs in the shop (due to their complexity), this is an extremely important area of study. A large portion of the vehicles that are being serviced today have computer control issues. For example, many vehicles have a check engine light, anti lock brake light or supplemental restraint light illuminated for reasons that most consumers don’t understand. Did you know that your average vehicle has more computers on board than the first rocket sent to the moon? Sources in the industry indicate that some of the more technologically advanced cars on the road today have nearly 100 computers in use! Well, if you haven’t already figured it out, computers are here to stay, especially on our cars!

Please keep us in mind for your auto repair and maintenance needs. If you have something that fits into our course of study, we just may be able to fit you in!
