A Day in the Weld Shop
by Cora B. from Sandwich
Dave B. and I got together to make a door holder for an antique car. Since I am a second year student and Dave is a first year, we first checked out the blueprints of how the door holder will look and got all of the material we needed. Then we measured and cut it, using a shear and a saw. To punch holes for the screws, we also used the shear and a drill. To make sure the door holder was perfectly square; we used a tape measure and a square so that it would turn out right. After the holder was all set, we tacked in the pieces. Then we checked it once more to make sure it was square, and we put welds on it. To finish the door holder, we painted it with primer to make sure it wouldn’t rust.
It is always very interesting to do the projects we do in Welding, because it helps you to learn a lot more about it and to know how to do things. In Welding, we look at it as a job, basically to get us ready for when we decide to take a career after high school. Not only are you learning something, but it helps you to figure out your future plans. Being in Welding, you learn so much from stick welding to gas and how to use the machines, certain tools, how to read blueprints and you get to make a lot of very interesting projects. It really helps you decide about it as a career. You could come into Welding and not know anything about it, and leave being an expert at it and ready to take it as a future career.
