Health Careers - Many Options Available

Health Occupations I class is for the student who would like to explore the many health career options available to them before choosing a career path to follow. Since August the students have learned many life skills such as Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), First Aide, and Vital signs: blood pressure, pulse, respiration, height, and weight.

They have visited Hillside Rehabilitation and Care Center to obtain vital signs of the residents at the facility. The students were able to see many health professionals in action taking care of the residents at Hillside.

In November, the p.m. First Responder students participated in a Disaster Drill coordinated by Valley West Community Hospital. Our students were patients with various injuries, as the hospital staff ran the drill.

The students were able to see hospital professionals in action during an emergency situation.

During the months of October and November, all the students of the First Responder class learned how to extricate a person from a car.
The students work in a squad of 3 to 4 students, and they had to use emergency equipment to remove a trapped victim from a car.
They have learned to place C-collars on a victim as well as to log roll and backboard a person who has a neck or spinal injury.

On November 12 we went on a field trip to Seattle Sutton’s Healthy Eating. Seattle Sutton talked to the students about proper nutrition, diabetes, and working hard to get what you want. We were able to tour the facility and see the production line in action. This very unique experience brought many great discussions about food preparation. Each of us received a prepackaged breakfast of a freshly made granola bar and grape juice. During our talk with Seattle Sutton, she had a drawing for one week of meals free. The morning winner was a Sandwich student, and the afternoon group winner was Mrs. Wolf (IVVC's Dean of Students).

Since Thanksgiving we have been studying nutrition, food preparation, portion control, and the food guide pyramid. The students will be trying different consistencies of food, to get an understanding of what some of their patients will be going through. The students have been working on meal planning so they may have an idea on how to pick and choose healthier items for their own diets, as well as future patients.
