Infection Control in Health Occupations II

In our class this month we have been studying Infection Control. How timely, considering the recent scare about a potentially deadly infection called MRSA! (What this really means is a really bad “bug” that is really hard to get rid of.) In some cases you may not know you have IT, until IT, has a hold of you!

The following are some interesting facts and ways to prevent getting this infection or other infections.

Handwashing is the single most important step you can do to prevent the spread of any infection.

Do you think about the times you don’t wash your hands? After you sneeze or cough? Most germs get into your body through your NOSE!

Not always using hand sanitizers is the answer.

If this is the only way you can wash your hands until you can use soap and water, then is better than nothing. Washing hands with soap and water will get rid of most germs.

It is a good idea to clean off surfaces on a weekly basis, or more when cold and flu season is here.  Do you regularly clean off the school tables in the classroom? What other places should be cleaned on a regular basis? Just to name a few besides the tables, what about the backs of chairs … the keyboards … the mouse … the phone … the door handles … the bathroom!!!

If you have open wounds, seek First Aid, and have them cleansed and covered! Monitor the healing process. Seek attention if it takes a long time for something to heal and the wound always looks red!

Now you get the idea, germs can be everywhere and if you think about it too long, it will drive you crazy, well let’s hope not crazy, just more aware.
