Law Enforcement Students Get Real-Life Scenario-Based Training

This week kicked off a month long real-life scenario-based training for Law Enforcement with the students conducting building searches. Students hopped on a bus and went to one of our official training facilities. Once there, we grouped together and had a short mini-training session reviewing what we had learned in class. Then it was time to put what we ‘thought’ we knew to the test.

Students were given a mock crime to investigate. It focused on searching an area where armed (plastic cap guns) offenders were hiding. The armed offenders were, in fact, certified police field training officers from various DuPage County police departments. The students had to search a 3,000 square foot area with multiple rooms.

The purpose of the training is to teach not only what to do, but more importantly what not to do. Most of the students did not succeed in finding the offenders and safely arresting them. This is, however, considered a training exercise and is the setting where we want the students to practice and learn. As the training went on, the fatal mistakes that were previously made were greatly reduced and the students gained confidence in their actions and commands.

Next week, the students will engage in “Redman” training where they will actually use moderate force to arrest and subdue offenders.
