Health Occupations I from the Students' Perspective
In Health Occupations I, we learn many skills.
The most recent of these skills has been blood pressure,
respiration, pulse and CPR. We have gone to different classrooms
and learned about ethics and first aid.
We have also learned different life skills. We have learned how to
be understanding, unbiased, and learned how to make ethical
decisions. Also, we have learned how to conduct ourselves in a
professional manner. Health Occupations I has given us the
confidence and skills to pursue the professions we desire.

Since we started Health Occupations, we have been focusing on
first aid and the human body. We all received our CPR certification
after saving the manikin and relieving Charlie of his choking.
Beware, we can save your lives!!!
Recently we have been studying our basic skills, including taking
blood pressures, pulses, and respiration. These are the skills
we will all be using during our volunteer work and job
shadowing. Every Tuesday we’ll be taking the First Responder
Course, which will prepare us to work at local fire
departments. Be careful driving because you might see us on
ride-alongs!!

As a senior at Plano High School and Indian Valley Vocational
Center (also known as IVVC), they help students plan for our
future. In our health occupational class, we learn many
skills. Skills we need to learn to further our
education. CPR was one basic technique that was taught to
us. The hands-on learning really helps students learn quicker.
After every class I’m convinced that nurses are the heartbeat of
health care. We also learn first aid, blood pressure and
medical terms. This is just the beginning; imagine how much
knowledge these students will have at the end of this
program. We all have one thing in common, the interest in
caring for others. If love can’t cure it, nurses will. And
that’s what we plan to be.

Going into a new class, starting something new can be good or bad -
it’s your choice. Coming in to this class we were excited, we
got to learn new things like CPR and blood pressure. This was very
useful, why you ask? Well, with CPR you can make a difference in
someone’s life. Whether it be the life of an infant or an adult, we
learned that the first minutes are very crucial. The number and
length of breaths and the depth of compressions depends on the
stage of life that person is in. Later in the year, we will
continue learning these and other skills that will be helpful if we
go into the medical field. We are also taking field trips to places
like Seattle Suttons. So far we’ve just learned a couple of
things, but we still have a long year to go and new territories to
explore.

In our journey to become a registered nurse, nursing aid and
etc., we have to reach our goals and find out who and what we want
to be. In Health Occupations, we became certified for CPR, learned
how to take and read blood pressure. And as we continue, we
will learn to become First Responders and explore the different
health careers that we can choose from. We also get to
experience job shadowing, as well as 10 hours of volunteer work at
hospitals, physician’s offices and other health care
areas. Health Occupations I will give us the skills we need to
have in the medical fields. This class does more than teach
you what’s in the nursing field, it also shows other jobs that this
class helps you learn. Health Occupations I is a great class
to take if you are interested in Nursing or other medical
careers.

Blood pressures, medical terms, and CPR. All of these are
activities the Health Occupations I class has been doing for the
past month. As well as staying as sane as possible, all of the
students have been working hard to pass every test, and score well
on every project. We all are looking forward to visiting the
Hillside Nursing Home, and learning the basics of doing vital
signs.
Though most of us are concentrating on vital signs, some have their
heads in the clouds. “I can't wait to wear those cute little
scrubs,” junior Jessica says. We are all very anxious to do all the
fun activities throughout the year.
